ASPECTS are fun as fuck lol

Aspects are the twelve fundamental forces of Homestuck. They describe the makeup of a story, a universe, and a video game -- all at the same time. They're incredibly flexible tools.

Each aspect is in a pair with another, shown in the above image. There are twelve, and each pair deals with a different part of storytelling/game mechanics/The Comic/the universe.

Aspects can be both incredibly personal and incredibly vast in their scope.

We'll start with the fundamental and expand outwards.

It starts with Time.

TIME

Time is the Aspect of the ink of the story. It is time, it is momentum, it is music. It is loops and it is perpetuity. Time is the Aspect of Death. (edited)

Time is one of the two fundamental aspects. Without Time and Space you don't have anything to work with -- Pages and Ink

There are obviously tons more nuances to all of these elements, but we'll come back to them. They make a lot more sense when in relation with each other.

Homestuck is kind of a parody of its own genre to begin with. That's the point of the adversarial reader/author relationship

SPACE

Space is the Aspect of the pages of the story. It is the universe where it takes place. It is vast and it is untouched, it is entropically mute without Space. Space is distant, reflected in Space players often having physical distance between them and the world. Space is also the Big Bang. Space is the natal universe -- it is explosions. Gas being lit. That's all you really need

The game inside of homestuck only has a few game mechanics tied to any aspects whatsoever, and one is frog breeding, and the other is Scratching, which is tied to the music thematic stuff of Time, but we'll get to that in the game mechanics stuff

But time and space are the ink on paper

It's the other aspects that make it into a Story.

LIGHT

Light is everything. It is the viewpoint, it is what you see. It is wealth and shiny things. It is relevance in a crowded spotlight. Light is canon. Light is correct. Light players tend to be wayyy up their own asses.

Just way up there

Light is really best understood in relation to Void, but it's also understood by what, like, a Thief of Light would steal, or what a Seer of Light sees. Gold, jewels, gems, screentime.

Where things will go and what will shake out.

It's the camera in your face and its the shape of things in your head.

It's also very funny

Mostly because I like making everything relevant to everything

It's connections -- yarn linking photos on a corkboard

But not unheard of.

Homestuck's void is filled with eldritch horrors that created the universe before the universe before the universe of Homestuck

Stagehands of reality

And taking the property of void from an object allows a Rogue of Void to essentially make something from nothing

Void players necessarily are not focused on by the narrative.

They evade the grasp of the PoV

Instead doing their own thing where they can't be seen.

Void players sometimes struggle with feeling unheard

And void players are excellent at letting go

Light players can learn from Void.

A light player is often obsessed with success, with being the name in everyone's mouth at any cost

A void player knows that doesn't matter if they have their friends with them in their pocket of nothing.

The fun one! Breath is the aspect of being the wind waker. it's me. Breath is freedom; of movement, of expression, from tyranny. Breath players have connection to the winds of change, the soul (neshama, in hebrew, is also the word for breath). (Breath isn't the element of the immortal soul, though -- that's Heart.) Breath is the soul in your body, which paired with your blood makes you alive.

Famous breath players include John Egbert, Toon Link, Sonic the Hedgehog and Scout TF2.
